Why Every Parent and Coach Needs to Read Guiding Your Child's Athletic Journey

Guiding Your Child’s Athletic Journey by Alex Compton and Kevin Dalafu reframes what truly matters in youth sports: raising strong, independent people and building supportive relationships between parents and their kids.
Compton, a father of three and former professional basketball coach, lays the foundation for this guide by blending research with personal experiences. Dalafu, a high school coach, educator, and a former player, contributes his own relatable stories that encourage readers to reflect on their own approach. Together, they offer a thoughtful guide for coaches and parents to navigate the modern youth sports landscape. As a former athlete, a lot of their stories hit close to home and reminded me of the strengths (and weaknesses) of the adults who guided me through youth sports.
There isn’t a simple answer to guiding a child’s athletic journey; there’s only process-- engaging consistently and meaningfully, with all the inevitable ups and downs

One point that stood out is the power of leading by example. I couldn't help but think back on some of the toughest teams I faced in youth soccer. Often, when the kids were talking trash or fouling, their coaches and parents were encouraging it from the sideline. Their behavior often crossed the line into something mean or dangerous. It's a clear reminder that the actions of adults matter in the shaping of young athletes and people.
The authors also emphasize the importance of clear communication, particularly in emotional moments. Dalafu recalls one moment when he slipped up after his sons basketball game. In a moment of frustration, he blamed his son for his team's loss. Despite apologizing immediately, the weight of his words had already left a mark on him.
His story reminded me of a time when my dad, an assistant coach to my U9 soccer team, had a similar mishap. His frustration, however, was directed to another player on my team who had seemingly forgotten what sport she was playing. I was mortified and I could immediately sense my dad's regret. Even though his words weren't directed at me, I can still feel the impact of those words to this day.
Both stories prove that our best communication never comes in an instance of anger. Taking a breath, thinking, and moving forward with intention can go a long way. From that day forward my dad never yelled at a player on my team again. He listened, guided, and coached in a way that felt safe.
Throughout the book, stories like these demonstrate the power of youth sports to create better young athletes and people and inspire positive change in the adults involved too.
When we create an environment where practice is celebrated and effort is valued over immediate outcomes, we lay the groundwork for greatness.

What makes this book particularly compelling is its authenticity. The mix of research-backed insights and honest, vulnerable storytelling creates a tone that is real and relatable. When you know you aren't alone in your shortcomings, it can make it easier to address where you went wrong.
Even for those without children, like myself, I found the lessons meaningful. It's a reminder of how much environment and guidance shape who we become. Guiding Your Child’s Athletic Journey reinforces the importance of consistency, communication, and presence, reminding readers that small, everyday actions have a lasting impact. This is clear in the final pages when Compton reflects on the support he received from his own parents.
We can’t force growth, but we can ensure that the soil is rich, that our children feel our support not only on the sidelines but in every other corner of their lives.

This book is a valuable resource for any parent, coach, or mentor involved in youth sports, offering not just strategies, but a mindset that prioritizes character, relationships, and development.
