Derick Hall's story began as a true miracle. Born prematurely, just five months into his mother's pregnancy, doctors warned that his chances of survival were low and even suggested taking him off life support.
Derick says that it is a miracle he is still alive today.
His grandmother recalls a tiny, premature baby holding onto her finger. "All hands on deck" she said, describing the early care and attention that kept him alive.
Derick credits his mother for his survival and drive. "I don't know too many people that would have the ambition and drive to do that," he says. "She's my superhero, she's my Wonder Woman. She's the person who kept me living."
Growing up, Derick faced challenges beyond survival. Introduced to football at age four, he struggled with asthma, shortness of breath, and chest tightness, making it difficult to keep up with other kids on the field. Though determination and hard work, Derick overcame those obstacles. Coming out of high school, he was a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, and ultimately committed to play college football at Auburn University.
Support from his "village" was crucial. While at Auburn in the fall of 2022, Derick's home state of Mississippi faced a water crisis when pipes burst during freezing temperatures. Derick made the generous decision to donate all of his NIL earnings to help the state recover.
His talent and dedication didn't go unnoticed. In the 2023 NFL draft, Derick was drafted 37th overall in the second round by the Seattle Seahawks.
Today, the Derick Hall One Percent Foundation raises money to support premature babies and their families, makes donations to combat food insecurity, and expands access to youth sports and activities for underserved communities.
Now, Derick Hall's story comes full circle as he prepares for the biggest stage in football: the Super Bowl.
